| IGI Update, April 2, 2009 - Kilowatt Ours TONIGHT ... and more |
|
Greetings from the Irvington Green Initiative! I hope your Earth Hour was full of candlelit ambiance - if you were at Lazy Daze, it definitely was! Brian Pitzer and other musicians kept us rockin' (acoustically) throughout the hour and the place was packed. Stop by and thank Jeff for hosting the party, if you get a chance! April 25 is fast approaching, with both the Great Irvington Cleanup and Earth Day Indiana on that busy Saturday. Will you join me and other volunteers that day in picking up trash, painting, helping with recycling, and otherwise beautifying our neighborhood? See below for details on the cleanup, as well as information on:
Great Irvington Cleanup and Resource Day/Earth Day Indiana Volunteers are needed for the Great Irvington Cleanup and Resource Day. Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 25. This year IDO is adding even more opportunities for every neighbor to get involved. This will be another great day to clean up and beautify Irvington! Volunteer opportunities include greeting, trash pickup, painting, and recycle transport. Coordinator Mallory Cowden says: "For those transporting the recycling, they will need to have a vehicle with enough space to hold recycling. At least two or three vehicles will be needed for transporting materials. Containers will be provided, so even those without pickups can help out. Volunteers will transport plastics, cardboard, and phone books to Indianapolis Recycled Fiber at 1775 S. West St. They need to be at the Irvington Branch Library by 12:30PM, where volunteers will help them load their vehicle. The cardboard should already be broken down, but if a box or two was missed they need to do that. Once at Indianapolis Recycled Fiber the volunteers can put the materials in corresponding bins located outside the gates." Please see the attached signup sheet for details on other "jobs" available that day, and contact Mallory at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or 260-0669 to volunteer or get more information. And after a morning of spiffing up Irvington, why not head downtown to the annual Earth Day Indiana festival? See http://earthdayindiana.org/ for details on this family-friendly event, taking place from 11am-4pm April 25 at the American Legion Mall downtown. ___
Kilowatt Ours will be shown on PBS (20) tonight at 9. This was the first enviro-film IGI brought to Irvington, and it is well worth watching if you missed it. Mountaintop removal is one of the more devastating impacts of our use of coal. The good news is, there are many things we can do to cut our energy use, and this film will inspire you to take action. (If you don't happen to see it tonight, IGI has a loaner copy available.) More info: http://www.kilowattours.org/
IPL's Green Power option If you haven't already done so, an easy way to have a direct impact on the amount of coal used is to switch to renewable energy sources. This is much simpler than you might think, and costs very little! Go to IPL's Green Power page to enroll. ___

Merging Economics and Ecology Join sustainable economist Greg Buck for a panel discussion of the intersection of economics and ecology at the Fifth Annual Midwest Peace and Justice Summit, 10:45am Saturday at IUPUI. The panel will discuss creating economies that accurately reflect the true inhabited world. Using such a broadened definition, the practices of Economics and Ecology merge.
The Summit will take place mainly on Sat. April 4 at IUPUI’s Informatics Building, corner of West and Michigan (with free parking in the lot to its west). In addition to this panel, more than a dozen workshops, lectures, movies, musical performances, and a public peace demonstration are scheduled for this year. All events, and even meals, are free.
