| Herding cats? |
|
Whether you are an animal lover or not, you may be one of many Irvington residents tired of dealing with the overabundance of Indy Feral Cats in the neighborhood. That ear-tipped kitty curled up in your potted fern? Most likely an Indy Feral cat. One Irvington resident recently posed this question: “What can be done about the Indy Feral cats in the neighborhood? I appreciate the effort for reducing wild animals in the area. But I am absolutely fed up with cats hanging out on my porch, using my yard as a litter box, finding dead birds and mice on my sidewalk - all because two houses on my street feed cats under the feral program - so I cannot even call to have the nuisance cats picked up!” On the one hand, Indy Feral has compassionately and humanely managed the trapping, sterilizing, vaccinating, and colonizing of thousands of feral cats across the city. On the other hand, colonized kitties take up residence on our front porches, under our cars and in our flower beds…and can be somewhat of a nuisance. Indy Feral helpfully provides “Nuisance Prevention Tips for Feral Cats” on its website at www.indyferal.org. Some Irvingtonians, however, argue that they shouldn’t have to bear both the cost and trouble of these preventative measures just because an Indy Feral cat colony lives nearby. This is not a new – or easily solved – issue. Would anyone like to share their comments or ideas for how to manage this situation best for Irvingtonians and kitties alike? |
