Herding cats?
Whether you are an animal lover or not, you may be one of many Irvington residents tired of dealing with the overabundance of Indy Feral Cats in the neighborhood.  That ear-tipped kitty curled up in your potted fern?  Most likely an Indy Feral cat.  One Irvington resident recently posed this question:

“What can be done about the Indy Feral cats in the neighborhood?  I appreciate the effort for reducing wild animals in the area. But I am absolutely fed up with cats hanging out on my porch, using my yard as a litter box, finding dead birds and mice on my sidewalk - all because two houses on my street feed cats under the feral program - so I cannot even call to have the nuisance cats picked up!”

On the one hand, Indy Feral has compassionately and humanely managed the trapping, sterilizing, vaccinating, and colonizing of thousands of feral cats across the city.  On the other hand, colonized kitties take up residence on our front porches, under our cars and in our flower beds…and can be somewhat of a nuisance.  Indy Feral helpfully provides “Nuisance Prevention Tips for Feral Cats” on its website at www.indyferal.org.  Some Irvingtonians, however, argue that they shouldn’t have to bear both the cost and trouble of these preventative measures just because an Indy Feral cat colony lives nearby.

This is not a new – or easily solved – issue.  Would anyone like to share their comments or ideas for how to manage this situation best for Irvingtonians and kitties alike?

Irvington Residents Say "Thanks!"

Keep Indianapolis Beautiful had volunteers out planting trees. Irvington Terrace was one of the neighborhoods targeted for that effort.

Residents and volunteers set out to plant 70 trees or so along Washington Street. The trees will help reduce street pollution and noise along the busy thoroughfare. This effort is part of KIB's NeighborWoods program. The program has the ambitious goal of planting 100,000 trees over the next 10 years.

Here's a word of thanks from Irvington residents Larry and Juanita Whiteman:

My husband and I just wanted to send a big THANK YOU to the Irvington Terrace residents who helped plant all the beautiful trees with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful. It was so great to see the trees that tears welled up in my eyes.  We are long time residents of Irvington, as well as senior citizens, and hope to be alive to see all the other beautification projects that are to come along, such as the "street scape" that is supposed to be on U.S. 40 (Washington St) between Ritter and Audubon. We moved to Irvington long ago because of the tree lined streets and are again so grateful for the trees along Washington Street that were planted on May 1st.

Sincerely,

Larry and Juanita Whiteman

We applaud the efforts of organizations like KIB as they truly help keep Irvington and other Indianapolis communities beautiful.
